Three years ago, St. Charles Borromeo School in Coldwater found themselves in a place they hadn’t been in quite some time. With enrollment steadily growing over the years, the school was now at the point where they had a full middle school population in grades 6-8. This growth in enrollment allowed them to offer new extra-curricular opportunities for this age group, including the introduction of a Quiz Bowl team.
Mr. Paradine, one of St. Charles Borromeo’s middle school teachers was tapped as the advisor/coach of the quiz bowl team when it was originally formed and still coaches the team today. This year’s team consists of five students. It takes a lot of practicing and studying to prepare for quiz bowl tournaments. Students need to know a wide array of information as questions can come from any area of knowledge such as; literature, history, science, and fine arts to even topics like popular culture, current events, and sports.
On Saturday, December 1, the team traveled to Holt Middle School and participated in a multi-school quiz bowl tournament. The team had quite a successful day and took home second place! This finish qualified them to participate for the first time in the National Academic Quiz Tournament (NAQT) that will be held May 10-12, 2019 in Chicago. At this tournament, the St. Charles team will compete against other middle school teams in their division from across the nation.
The students have three more quiz bowl tournaments to help them prepare for the national tournament in May. If you would like to see them in action, St. Charles Borromeo School will be hosting a middle school quiz bowl tournament on Saturday, January 19 in their school gym.
